How far can we rely on the so-called government safety programmes?

The mentality of the public’s perception on the crime rates happening has to change. This so-called crime trend and patterns that has been happening not just these recent months but for the past years should not be taken lightly. The citizens of Malaysia should really start being more responsible in taking safety precautions. Sometimes, the public blame it on the way the police handles such cases (car stolen, breaking into houses or shops, etc.), but policing is not entirely to be blamed. It is the public that also fails to play their role in taking safety precautions in preventing those robbery or snatch cases from happening. The government has in fact introduced a programme called National Key Result Area( NKRA) in 2009 to help reduce the crimes index. The NKRA is a programme by the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) which was introduced by the Prime Minister, Y.A.B Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak. Still, the public are so ignorant, especially when It comes to cases where cars are stolen.

Nowadays, you read almost everyday that cars are being stolen, whether from the house or when the owner is making a quick stop to buy something from a store. Some car drivers even leave their engine running with the key still intact when buying an item from a store. That is attracting unnecessary attention. Trying to save time by doing that is not being smart; it’s called being lazy! What is the point of being educated, if a simple thing such as finding a parking space and turning off your car is such a problem? Yes, you do have to pay to park in some parking lots, but it certainly is much cheaper when you think of how much you will have to pay later to get a new car. Needless to say for those who do take the precautions, it is a very commendable step to take.

While it is important to practice this precaution, some cases where crimes such as these have been happening, it does make people feel helpless even when they do take the steps of being careful. This is why the perceptions of the public get very negative. While I do agree that the public should do their part by reporting these cases, I feel, as do the rest of the public, to still question the effectiveness of this programme. Even if cases are being reported, will it guarantee that this kind of cases will decrease? Perhaps the only solution to this issue is to take the precautions needed, yes it may not stop it entirely from happening but it does help to avoid or prevent it from happening.

Do your part, and you could make a difference to the safety of the nation where these robbery crimes are concern!
